Bendigo Madison - Saturday

.

The Bendigo Madison was held over the weekend of 12th & 13th March 2005 at the Tom Flood velodrome in Bendigo.

The madison weekend is full of action for all racing grades. Running races also take place in the centre of the track during the weekend. There is always something to watch! The Bendigo Madison itself takes place on Sunday evening in front of thousands of spectators, who arrive during the afternoon and set up their chairs and picnics to wait for the big event, whilst watching the seniors, juniors and women racing.

This year, the Great Britain Under 23 Academy riders were competing over the 2 days, following on from their experiences at the Track World Cup in Sydney. They went on from Bendigo to the Track World Championships in LA. Of these Bendigo visitors, Ed Clancy was a member of the 5-rider squad which won the Team Pursuit and Mark Crawford went on to win the Madison World Championship, with partner Rob Hayles.

The Madison is legendary. The build-up is exciting. Local juniors, each with the team name of a pair of competitors attached to a sign on their bikes ride a lap in front of the team as they are introduced to the crowd. The race starts with a couple of non-competitive laps behind a 'safety car' !!!

Winners this year were from the VIS, the Victorian Institute of Sport, Simon Clarke and Nick Sanderson.
