The Commonwealth Youth Games are a relatively new international competition. The first Youth Games were held in Edinburgh in 2000, this second edition was held in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia in 2004.

The track racing took place at the Tom Flood Velodrome on a 415m painted cement track. The road race and time trials took place to the southeast of Bendigo. The track days were chilly, whilst the road days were, by chance, hot and sunny. Such conditions made it difficult for the Northern Hemisphere competitors, unused to the baking 30'C-plus temperatures on the tough courses. The mountainbike event took place on an especiallly prepared course in a regional park.
